Tenerife Island

Tour Tenerife with the Green Bearded Bard

About this site

Chinchado Roque and Mt Teide

Tenerife Island is a new and evolving site created by Steve Andrews aka the Bard of Ely aka Green Beard who has been writing health features for Tenerife News since 2004 and he will be continuing to do this. Although he was born in Wales and has lived so much of his life there, Steve fell so in love with the beautiful island of Tenerife that he has relocated to the Canaries and is currently based in San Marcos, near Icod de los Vinos.

The aim of the site is to provide all manner of information of interest to visitors to Tenerife island as well as residents already there.  Places to visit, entertainment, eating out, accomodation available in the various towns and cities, articles about the flora and fauna, a look at the media of Tenerife island with contact links, news, reviews and information not generally covered elsewhere but of use to newcomers will be some of the subject matter.

You may also find a lot of information and be able to make friends on the island at the following two popular Tenerife forums:

http://www.sun4free.com/forum/

and at http://www.tenerifeforum.com/

Tenerife Poems by Bard of Ely

These are a selection of poems written by the Bard of Ely whilst visiting Tenerife in the spring of 2004:

Pieces of Paradise

A bright yellow butterfly flies
As lizards rustle leaves on the warm earth,
Azure sky above and sea below likewise,
Sand clouds from the Sahara shroud el Bailadero,
And a lone locust survivor
Is all that's left of the swarm
That flew from distant lands.
In the heather forest is a cool trail
For the lone walker,
Who sees and hears it all.

Sketch

Above Roque Negro
The clouds were like fountains,
Or flowers in the air,
In the vineyard the sunburnt people
Were a reminder of how it used to be.
I called out to them "Hola,"
Then I left for Bar Juan
And a Coca Cola.

Childhood

Bees hum and cocks crow my childhood;
Butterflies, lizards, gardens and flowers,
All returning from my past;
My life forgotten found again,
Being reborn in Tenerife.
Truly this is a blessed isle,
Where I've found my youth once more;
If only somebody had told me sooner.

La Laguna Sunset

Inhaling deeply from the gum-tree fruit I found
And am now carrying in my pocket,
I gaze in wonder at a darkening el Teide,
Silhouetted against salmon-pink,
Smoky grey, and palest blue skies;
The full moon is strong and yellow-gold,
And I feel her rise behind me.

Bryophyllums and Pigeons in Exotic Locations

Bryophyllum daigremontianum grows
In much the same way
In a pot in a living room in Cardiff, South Wales,
As in the far more exotic Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife,
Where it flourishes around a tree at a local cafe-bar,
And randomly it drops its little plantlets
To carry on the species.
Feral pigeons are much the same in Tenerife too;
They beg politely and not so politely
For scraps we throw.
People shoo them away here, as well as there,
And some of the birds are much cleaner,
But others have tacky feet and hobble.

Hotels, Hostales and Pensions around the Island

Visitors and travellers around Tenerife may need somewhere to stay overnight or longer so here is a list of  places you can try with phone numbers, overnight prices if known (NB the prices vary according to single or double rooms, facilities and the time of year) and star-ratings. Please also note that whilst I have tried to provide as accurate information as possible, Tenerife is an island where changes are always being made and I am unable to verify that all the details I have posted are currently correct. I do wish to make the point, though, that pensins can work out a lot cheaper than hotels and in some parts of the island are the only very short-term accomodation available. It is therefore handy to know about pensins if you intend travelling around and staying in many parts of Tenerife.
